This November, more than 400 volunteers will travel to South Africa for Building Blitz 2026, constructing classrooms and educational facilities for children living in disadvantaged communities.
Our goal is simple: every volunteer wearing a sponsored hard hat.
When you sponsor a hard hat, you’re doing far more than supporting a volunteer. Your sponsorship helps fund the Mellon Educate Literacy Programme, ensuring children continue to receive life-changing literacy support long after Building Blitz has ended.
Whether you’re a company looking to showcase your commitment to corporate social responsibility, a sports club, a school or an individual supporter, your sponsorship becomes part of one of the world’s most inspiring building sites.
We believe every child deserves the opportunity to learn to read. Yet in South Africa, 81% of children aged 9–10 cannot read for meaning, highlighting the scale of the literacy crisis.
Funds raised through Hard Hat sponsorship support the Mellon Educate Literacy Programme, providing one-to-one tutoring, educational resources and Literacy Hubs where children can build the reading skills they need to thrive.
Our approach also creates opportunities for unemployed young adults aged 18–28, training them as Community Literacy Tutors who deliver literacy support within their own communities.
Every sponsored hard hat creates a lasting legacy that extends well beyond Building Blitz week.
Taking part in the Literacy Hat challenge is simple and every step directly supports children’s education and literacy development.
Make a contribution by sponsoring a Literacy Hat, helping to fund the Mellon Educate Literacy Programme and supporting children learning to read.
Your sponsorship helps provide one-on-one literacy tutoring, learning resources, and access to safe, supportive Literacy Hubs where children can develop essential reading skills.
Each Literacy Hat sponsored contributes to improving literacy outcomes for children while also supporting the training and employment of Community Literacy Tutors.
Take part as a school, company, sports club, or community group and share your involvement in the literacy fundraising challenge, helping to raise awareness and inspire others to get involved.
