We believe that it’s every child’s right to learn to read. The reality in South Africa is that 81% of primary school aged children 9-10 years are unable to read for meaning in any language. The Mellon Educate Literacy Programme is designed to address this educational crisis and by sponsoring a Literacy Hat, you will directly be helping a child to discover a world of words. It is a gift that can change lives forever. Not only do we help children to learn to read but we do so by training unemployed youth (aged from 18-28) living in the townships adjacent to the schools who then become Community Literacy Tutors, this approach is proving to be extremely effective and by helping both children and young people we are achieving a classic “double bubble”.
