I know as young people, many of you dream of making a difference in this world, so don’t leave it any longer. Come out on our 1-week Transition Year Programme to South Africa. You’ll work hard, you’ll be tired and exhausted, but you will go home with a pride that will never leave you.
Niall Mellon Voluntary CEO, Mellon Educate
Student Volunteer Programme 2027
Step outside the classroom and gain real-world experience through Mellon Educate’s student volunteer programme in South Africa. This one-week international programme allows students to develop new skills, broaden their perspective, and support education initiatives that create meaningful, lasting change.
For Irish students, this programme is also a popular Transition Year option, combining personal development with hands-on work in under-resourced communities.
The programme takes place in South Africa, where students actively contribute to Mellon Educate’s education and literacy initiatives. Participants take part in a range of structured, hands-on activities, including:
Light construction and improvement of school facilities
Supporting early literacy through supervised one-on-one tutoring
Assisting with school-based programmes and initiatives
Engaging with local students, teachers, and communities
Designed to build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills, the programme encourages students to step outside their comfort zone and develop a strong sense of global responsibility. Participants return home with practical experience, new skills, and a deeper understanding of the role education plays in creating opportunity.
Alongside the programme, students also engage with South Africa’s culture and environment, making it a memorable and life-changing experience both in and beyond the classroom.
“The Mellon Educate TY Blitz was one of the best experiences of my life. The journey to get to South Africa was rewarding, as I had already made so many friends and learned so much about fundraising and the charity. Overall, this was an amazing week, and I would recommend it to anyone that is considering taking part, as all the hard work is worth it.”
— Neala
“As a parent travelling with my daughter and her 2 friends, we were unsure about what lay ahead. We needn’t have worried… we were treated as part of the ‘Mellon Family’ from the outset, and we felt very much part of it. It’s easy to understand why people get the blitz bug, this charity and the work they do is quite wonderful.”
— Clare
“The TY Blitz was so good that I spent the entire flight home planning how I could go back to Cape Town with Mellon Educate again.”
— Molly
