Transition Year Volunteer Programme 2027
Step outside the classroom and explore new skills, career paths, and global perspectives through the Mellon Educate Transition Year Programme in South Africa. This one-week international programme gives TY students the opportunity to gain real-world experience while supporting education and making a genuine difference in the lives of children.
The programme takes place in South Africa, where students actively support Mellon Educate’s education initiatives in under-resourced communities. Participants take part in a range of structured, hands-on activities, including:
Light construction and renovation of school classrooms
Supporting early literacy through supervised one-to-one tutoring
Assisting with our school feeding programme
Engaging with local students, teachers and school communities
Designed specifically for Transition Year students, the programme helps build confidence, teamwork and leadership skills, while encouraging a strong sense of global responsibility. Students return home with practical experience, new skills and a deeper understanding of the role education plays in creating lasting change.
Alongside the programme, students also have the opportunity to experience South Africa’s rich culture and scenery, making this a memorable and life-changing Transition Year experience abroad.
“The Mellon Educate TY Blitz was one of the best experiences of my life. The journey to get to South Africa was rewarding, as I had already made so many friends and learned so much about fundraising and the charity. Overall, this was an amazing week, and I would recommend it to anyone that is considering taking part, as all the hard work is worth it.”
— Neala
“As a parent travelling with my daughter and her 2 friends, we were unsure about what lay ahead. We needn’t have worried… we were treated as part of the ‘Mellon Family’ from the outset, and we felt very much part of it. It’s easy to understand why people get the blitz bug, this charity and the work they do is quite wonderful.”
— Clare
“The TY Blitz was so good that I spent the entire flight home planning how I could go back to Cape Town with Mellon Educate again.”
— Molly
